From 27 September 2026, the EU's Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo or ECGT, EU 2024/825) will make it illegal to use vague or unsubstantiated environmental claims in consumer-facing communication, and the exhibition and events industry, as any other business, is in scope.
"Green venue", "Sustainable destination", "Eco-friendly trade fair", “Carbon neutral congress” - if your marketing, sponsorship materials, or on-site signage use language like this without hard evidence behind it, you could be exposed to reputational risk and legal challenges under national consumer protection law.
EEEIA - the European Events and Exhibition Industry Alliance - is bringing together experts and sector representatives for a dedicated webinar on what the EmpCo Directive actually means for destinations, venues, organisers, and all other partners in the industry, and how to adapt.
What you'll learn
Get the legal background directly from the European Commission and hear from a destination, a venue/organiser, and a global exhibition organiser on how they're adapting, and what's still unclear:
- What the EmpCo Directive changes, and why it matters specifically for trade fairs, congresses and other events, venues, and destination marketing organisations
- Which common claims ("carbon neutral," "sustainable," "eco-certified, generic green labels) will no longer be permissible without substantiation
- How the Directive interacts with existing sustainability certifications and offsetting-based claims
- How a global organiser outside the EU is approaching compliance
Who should attend
Venue and destination marketing teams, exhibition and event organisers, all partners of the industry, sustainability and compliance officers, and anyone responsible for how your organisation communicates about sustainability.
